quick hitter <> doing the math

DOING THE MATH ... sometimes it helps me to write down the numbers im trying to digest ... so indulge me

through the offseason ... the new york yankees signed left handed pitcher c c sabathia for $161 million dollars over 7 years (with an escape clause for "cc" after 3 years) ... just 5 days after signing sabathia to the offer he neither solicited or wanted (he wanted to play on the west coast and for a national league team) ... the yankees snagged oft-injured pitcher a j burnett for $82.5 mil over 5 years ... total so far is $243,500,000 ... then the big new york spenders picked up gold glove first baseman mark teixeira for a mere $180 mil for 8 years service (with a no trade clause) ... now my calculator says $423,500,000 ... surely no evidence of financial crisis in the bronx

on another page in the ledger it says ... the boston red sox signed american league most valuable player, gold glove second baseman, silver slugger and mlb 09 the show cover boy ... 25 year old dustin pedroia to a 6 year contract worth $40.5 million dollars (including club option for a 7th year) ... they then extended the contract of 29 year old gold glove first baseman kevin youkilis for $41.25 mil over 4 years (again with a club option for a 5th year) ... this time the calculator says $81,750,000 ... now they are on the verge of locking up 25 year old left handed pitcher jon lester with a 5 year contract for $30 mil (also reported to have a club option for year 6) ... the calculator now says $111,750,000

each team signed 3 key players ... the yankees went after free agents to bolster a team that finished 3rd in the al east last season ... the red sox locked up 3 young home grown talents on a team that came within 1 game of another world series appearance ... different directions ... different dollars ... the yankees spent $423,500,000 ... the red sox spent $111,750,000 ... difference according to the trusty calculator $311,750,000 ... (+) or (-) depending on your perspective ... i need to go contemplate these mind numbing numbers a bit ... then maybe ill have some thoughts
